History

Flagstaff Shelter Services, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) charity incorporated in the State of Arizona on May 1, 2006. We are a grassroots organization dedicated to providing emergency shelter to homeless men and women in Coconino County and the services needed to overcome the problems underlying homelessness

In the winter of 2006-2007 we established the first community based seasonal emergency shelter for homeless men in collaboration with the Flagstaff chapter of the Salvation Army, the Red Cross, Catholic Charities and Coconino County Community Services. Over 1500 bed nights were provided during the winter season and 3000 meals were served. This first shelter was located at 319 S. San Francisco in the Mexican Methodist Church, a historic landmark on Flagstaff's south side.

During the winter of 2007-08 we provided 3408 bed-nights (where bed nights equals the total number of nights where a bed space was not only provided but was used by a person in need). We provided emergency shelter services to 216 different people in an overnight setting.  Between the opening of our day center on December 7, 2007 and the middle of August 2008, FSS has provided day drop-in services to well over 650 people.

On January 15, 2008 the City of Flagstaff approved the lease of a portion of a city owned building at 214 W. Phoenix to Flagstaff Shelter Services to use as an interim shelter while plans for the permanent shelter are developed. The building is an abandoned warehouse that will be remodeled during the winter/spring of 2008. We will open for day shelter and supportive services on September 8, 2008 and for overnight services October 18, 2008.
